Has the current political environment cheapened the meaning of the word "racist"?

The word today seems to be used so carelessly and erroneously. You'd think that there was a burning cross on every lawn and that Jim Crow was never repealed with how often the subject comes up in political conversation. Yet, I feel like I very rarely meet a genuine racist
